In spite of what you may have heard, it's NOT the Species of wood that matters but how well SEASONED it is!!!! Freshly cut wood has at least a 50% moisture content. Fully seasoned wood should be no more than 20% (kiln dried wood is 15%). All wood should be seasoned at least ONE YEAR after it has been cut, split, & stacked! Hard woods such as oak, hickory, and cherry should really be seasoned for 2 years as they are more dense and hold moisture longer. Be careful if you buy firewood because some sellers will claim the wood is seasoned when it was cut recently. If the cut ends of the wood are not dark with small cracks or if the wood "sizzles" as you burn it, it is NOT properly seasoned!!!!
