Full Vented -
The most beautiful, realistic looking gas fireplace. This unit gives you all the "oohs and aahs" - lots of dancing yellow flame and a big bed of glowing embers. A nice heat producer as well with 50% or higher efficiency.
Direct Vent -
The next step up is the Direct Vent gas fireplace. Instead of requiring a metal chimney running through the roof, these units vent gasses using a 4" pipe that goes sideways through an outside wall and stops. Direct Vent Fireplaces also feature an airtight glass front so that no room air is pulled out of the house. A Direct Vent unit looks almost as realistic as a vented unit - with an even greater heat output (efficiency 70% - 85%). A Direct Vent unit is the ideal unit for new construction due to the possibility of air quality problems that can result with ventless units. Direct Vent has a little less yellow flame than High Efficiency Vented, but more than Ventless.
Ventless -
The third type of unit is the Ventless gas fireplace. They are extremely efficient and produce an enormous amount of heat. In order to be so efficient, however, they lack the realistic look of the other types. The flame is mostly blue with a little yellow at the tips. (The most expensive models have the best looking flames. Unfortunately, Ventless fireplaces will also burn anything in the air such as dust, pet hair and dander, perfumes, cooking sprays, etc. This "extra burning" may cause noticeable smells. This air pollution is compounded in new homes due to the tightness of new construction, which lets in little fresh air. In addition, Ventless can cause excessive moisture build-up inside the house - possibly leading to mold and mildew. To deal with these problems, we recommend a high quality air purifier to remove impurities before they are burned OR, idealy, install a Direct Vent gas fireplace in new construction. Ventless gas fireplaces are fine for older homes. A few Ventless models offer a catalytic after burner for odor reduction.
